Best Filament For Outdoor Parts That Last

A ranked answer for outdoor prints, covering UV stability, water resistance, heat, and the practical compromise when your printer has no enclosure.

Outdoors is three problems at once: ultraviolet light, water, and temperature swings. A filament can be excellent at one and hopeless at another, which is why the honest answer depends on where the part is mounted.

The ranking

  1. ASA. The default correct answer. UV stable, weather resistant, holds shape in direct sun. Needs an enclosure to print.
  2. ABS. Mechanically similar and cheaper, but yellows and chalks under UV within a season. Fine in shade, poor in sun.
  3. PETG. The practical compromise. Prints on any machine, resists water well, tolerates around 80 °C, and degrades slowly rather than dramatically under UV.
  4. Nylon. Tough and abrasion resistant, but absorbs water from the air and softens as it does. Only with a coating or in a dry, sheltered spot.
  5. PLA. Do not. It softens near 60 °C, goes brittle under UV, and a bracket in direct summer sun can fail within weeks.

What kills each material

Ultraviolet light breaks polymer chains. Colour fades first, then the surface chalks, then the part cracks under load it used to carry. ASA is formulated to resist this. ABS is not.

Heat is worse than most people expect. A dark part in direct sun reaches temperatures far above the air temperature, and a black PLA bracket on a south facing wall can pass its softening point on a warm day.

Water matters less for most filaments than people assume. PLA, PETG, ABS, and ASA all shrug off rain. Nylon is the exception: it absorbs water, swells slightly, and loses stiffness.

Freeze thaw cycles attack any part with trapped water in a cavity. Design drainage into outdoor parts.

If you cannot print ASA

Not everyone has an enclosure, and ASA on an open frame printer is an exercise in cracked prints. In that case:

  • Print PETG and accept slower degradation.
  • Choose a light colour to reduce heat absorption.
  • Mount the part in shade where you have the choice.
  • Paint it. A coat of exterior spray paint blocks UV effectively and buys years on almost any filament, including PLA. This is the cheapest fix available and the most overlooked.

Design choices that matter more than material

  • Thicker walls. Four perimeters instead of two roughly doubles the life of an outdoor part under load.
  • Fillets instead of sharp corners. UV embrittled plastic cracks at stress concentrations first.
  • Metal fasteners, not printed threads. Heat cycling loosens printed threads.
  • Design for replacement. A part that takes twenty minutes to reprint does not need to last a decade.
