Start at 200 °C with the bed at 50 °C. If your usual PLA profile sits at 215 °C or above, this material will string and look glassy at those temperatures.

The finish trick is documented by Fillamentum rather than folklore: print near 180-190 °C for a matte surface and near 210 °C for gloss. Print the same model twice at both ends and the difference is obvious, which makes this a useful filament for prototyping how a design will look before committing to a specialty spool.

Cooling stays high. Retraction is normal. The material is not fussy beyond respecting the lower temperatures.

Colour is the reason people buy it. Metallics have actual depth rather than a flat pigment look, and the range includes shades that are hard to find anywhere else. Layer lines are less visible than the gloss level suggests, probably because the pigments diffuse light.

Diameter consistency is very good. Extrusion stays even and single-wall vases come out without banding. Detail on small features is crisp thanks to the low print temperature, which is also why it suits miniatures.

Mechanically it is normal PLA: fine in the plane, brittle across layers, no heat resistance to speak of.

Where It Falls Short

Price is the obvious one, and 750 g spools make the per-kilogram figure worse than it first appears. Availability outside Europe is patchier than the big brands.

The low print window can also catch people out. Loaded into a printer with a generic PLA profile, it strings and looks worse than a spool costing a third as much, which produces some unfair reviews.

Verdict

Buy PLA Extrafill for display models, gifts, and anything photographed, and use the temperature-versus-finish control deliberately rather than by accident. For brackets and prototypes, print a budget spool and spend the difference on more filament.

What temperature should I print PLA Extrafill at?

Fillamentum specifies 190-210 °C, which is cooler than most PLA. The bed can be anywhere from unheated to about 55 °C. If your printer normally runs PLA at 215 °C, come down 10-15 °C for this one.

How do I get a matte or glossy finish with Extrafill?

Fillamentum's own guide says it plainly: print towards 180-190 °C for a more matte surface and towards the top of the range for gloss. It is the rare filament where surface finish is a deliberate slicer setting rather than a property of the spool.

Is Fillamentum worth the premium over budget PLA?

For visible parts, often yes. The colours are richer and more unusual than the mainstream brands offer, and consistency between spools is very good. For functional prints nobody will look at, it is money spent on nothing.
